Nicos Poulantzas

Nicos Poulantzas, a Greek political scientist and euro-communist activist, was born in Athens.

In 1960, he moved to France, where he lived and worked during the 60s and 70s..

His most famous works were Political Power and Social Classes, 1973 and Classes in Contemporary Capitalism, 1975.

Nicos Poulantzas developed theories of social classes and the state in capitalism.

With his academic work and self-giving participation in the movement of the Left, Nicos Poulantzas rose as a prominent figure of the organic intellectual of the Left.

His lifework was animated by the principles of democratic socialism and it was integrally linked with the endeavour of the Left to overcome dogmatic rigidity and to fight against any form of authoritative rule and domination.

Poulantzas died by suicide in 1979.
